This is part of a greater series all about colors in family pictures, see the intro post on that link for more great ideas. That’s my family up there when we celebrated my parents’ 50th anniversary at the beach. We decided to go with shades of blue to coordinate our family photo outfits.
You’ll look at these family photos in the future and you probably want to feel happy and satisfied instead of cringing at the outfit you chose. Though white and black colors seem classics, you should avoid them in your family portrait outfits as they tend to make your images look flat. You’d better prefer off-white or ivory to solid white. You need to try on the clothes you’ve chosen prior to the photo session and practice basic family portrait poses. If you feel comfortable standing, sitting, and jumping, you can be sure that you’ve made the right choice.
Ideas For What To Wear For Family Pictures (Season Specific!)
The first is wearing uncomfortable shoes that you can’t move around in during your photo session (yeah, I’m talking to you, moms!). Most of my sessions involve play, so if you’re in heels, it’s going to be really tough to let loose and enjoy your family. I also have many locations that require a bit of walking, which would be difficult in heels. If you really want to wear them, I’d suggest bringing another option you like for the more playful images, and save the heels for a few select photos.
For both mama and girlie, it’s all about marvelous matching sweaters. This one pictured is all-white with adorable black pom-poms smattered all over. Paired with jeans and white booties, this is an easy-to-pull-together look you’ll want to wear over and over again.
Summer Family Photo Shoot Outfit Ideas
Rylee + Cru – They have beyond adorable outfits that coordinate well with their younger kids line. I personally have ordered for my own maternity photos, but have seen many cute options for women who are not pregnant. Oversized can photograph frumpy or make you look larger. I know all about trying to hide that postpartum baby weight. However, if a top is boxy it will photograph like a box. To do this, take your one piece of clothing and start going through your other clothes that you already own.
Wearing denim fits the theme of a fall family photo, and pairs well with many different colors. Another helpful item to consider when trying to decide what to wear in your family photos is the location of your photoshoot. Are you going to be on the beach where there are plenty of neutral tones or under a tree surrounded by bright fall foliage? Select a color palette for your outfits that will complement the setting. Pick out items of clothing in colors that will complement your background and not compete with it. When picking what colors to wear for your fall family pictures, think of your family’s clothing choice as one big outfit.
DAD OUTFIT
If it is an outdoor shooting in cold weather, make sure you are warm and comfortable enough in your clothes. For summer beach photo session, there is no need to put on layers of clothes. Instead, I advise selecting 2-3 key colors and choosing clothing that fit this color scheme. Mind the number of family members, because 3 people in blue and one person in white doesn’t really look good.
This time changes throughout the year so make sure you’ve scheduled a family session during one of those hours. Of course, you will get your family shots but you will want to make sure that you get some of just the kids together and the kids individually too. They are growing so fast you will want to capture this moment in time of each of them. If you love these outfits check out where you can get them below. TEEN OUTFIT
Kylie Jenner steps out during Paris Fashion Week in a sheer dress with red detailing. She completed the look with her hair styled in sideswept bangs, and she carried a red purse to match her ensemble. Zendaya arrives for the Valentino ready-to-wear Spring/Summer 2023 show in Paris on Oct. 2. She opted for a sheer catsuit with a black sequin blazer over top.
Navy, cream and tan is a classic color scheme for family photos that works well for any season. The navy and cream pair beautifully with the pastel florals and bright greens of spring. They also look perfect among green grass and leaves at a park for summer family pictures. And these ‘neutral tones’ compliment the bright yellows and oranges of fall foliage. The cooler weather and beautiful jewel tones of fall make it a favorite time to plan a family portrait session.
