Is The Dress White And Gold Or Black And Blue

black and blue dress or white and gold

Older people and women were more likely to report seeing “The Dress” as white and gold, while younger people were more likely to say that it was black and blue. Now I can go back and forth to what ever one I’d like. But the weird thing is how certain I was it was black and blue and how certain my father was that it was gold and white. What a marvelous moment it was for me to realize no one was really “right or wrong”…. But experiencing it and seeing the white and gold as well, was eye opening. The reason a colour may look different in a photograph than it is in real life is down to the colour temperature in the environment when you were taking the picture.

The reason is probably so we can ignore the irrelevant information, i.e. the light colour and any sensitivity lag between the different cones and identify objects. It's also possible to be get quite a bit closer to grey, so I think to claim that the dress "actually IS white/grey" is pushing it a bit. Compare the disputed "blue/white" parts of the image to an actual grey of the same intensity side-by-side and I don't there's any way someone with normal eyesight could fail to see the difference.

For example, if you stare at a gray object and make the gray increasingly yellow or blue, then you’re more likely to see the object as yellow than as blue. This difference likely comes from how the eye evolved in the presence of natural lighting from the sun and the sky. For instance, people who live in snow all year round above the Arctic Circle have several names for different colors of snow, but to most of us, snow is just snow. She said she has a turquoise purse that some of her friends swear is green and others are sure is blue. Take a look at the original, but stare at it for around 30 seconds. Start to really believe it’s blue and black, it will start to turn.

However, when I looked closer for a minute or two my color perception shifted to blue/burnt orange and that's all I see now. A BuzzFeed page devoted to the debate had more than 25 million views early Friday, with 72 percent of Internet users insisting the dress was white and gold, while 28 percent swore it was blue and black. The post went viral on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, with users passionately split over what color the dress really is—blue with black lace, or white with gold lace. For example, if your brain assumes the lighting on the dress is very dim, it will assume the dress itself is highly reflective, or white and gold, Williams said.

Sure, it can mess with your eyes and it bothers you as you try and figure it out, but its just a dress. I think the internet is a way to express peoples opinion, i also think its great to connect with others i find it annoying when viral stuff like this gets more attention than anything else. For example if someone had cancer and fought through it, and the original sing What Does The Fox Say came out people would pay more attention on that.

Put it into to Photoshop and eye-dropper the colours. In real life, the dress would be in a large field of view, with other objects illuminated in the same way. Our brains would be able to separate the garment's lighting from its intrinsic color, Williams said. "I think the brain has just made a different assumption about how the dress is being illuminated." Now, the neurons fire the way they do because of electrical signals that are sent to them by the eyes, but electrical signals aren't colors either—they’re just, roughly put, moving electrons. And your eyes send the signals they do because of the way wavelengths of light interact with their rods and cones.

Why You Look Different in the Mirror Than in Photos

The only thing that is blue and black or white and gold is people's experiences. Scientists of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have cracked the science behind why a dress appeared black and blue to some but gold and white to others, differing perceptions that went viral on the Internet. This particular dress was particularly confusing because to some it appears blue and black, while to others, it is clearly white and gold. Older people and women were more likely to report seeing “the dress” as white and gold, while younger people were more likely to say that it.

Curiously, the xkcd comic doesn't fool my eyes at all. Yes, the photo was washed out and so looked different than the physical dress. When I see stuff like that, my brain corrects the image for me.

If your eyes "choose" to look into the lace detail, you will see gold and white. If you "choose" to look at the blue stripes, you will see black and blue. The company that sells the dress is gaining heavily from this debate.
